the other day we flew down to DC to do a show at george mason university (details forthcoming), but before that show, we did an AM show at a weird lil’ school in downtown DC full of crazy students and equally crazy teachers. it’s an eclectic place, to say the least. ( to quote their website, “ Edmund Burke School was founded in 1968. 1968!” ). about 70 of the students were participating in a day of silence in honor of GLBT students around the world - luckily, they were assured before our show that they were allowed to laugh out loud. LOL, indeed. thanks, EBS!

this has been popping up wherever we go lately - do you really want 'mango passion' flavored quinoa in a bottle from the airport? i don't.
just saw this at the pet supply store, in a freezer:

we recently had a great homecoming, at umass-amherst’s promedy jam, hosted by umass’s own student valley productions. we started performing at their annual “jam” when we were in college. now we’re not students, but eat at college cafeteria’s more than we did when we were. so we thought we’d come back and say hi to our old stompin’ grounds. it was a real hoot, the show was a blast, and we were treated to a gen-u-ine umass amherst afterparty, complete with PBR. what more can you ask for?
—
pile of props or new member? you decide.
—
zach also did a solo set as mr. napkins. he was well liked.
—
aforementioned pbr.
we like food. we like vegetarian food. i, personally, go nuts for fake meat stuff - give me a menu with “beef and broccoli”, then tell me that the beef is not actually beef, and i’m your’s. so you can imagine how exciting it was when zach and i had a couple hours to grab lunch before our flight out of richmond virginia, and we stumbled upon an all-vegan fake meat chinese restaurant called panda veg.
—
the vegan crab rangoon was really quite good, i thought, but my curry tofu balls were a kind of bizarre chinese falafel, and my fake beef tasted like a cinnamon roll and made me feel bad. try as we might, we still can’t beat boston’s the grasshopper
.
—
next time we’re in richmond, though, we’ll probably go back there. maybe it was just a fluke - right? RIGHT?!?!
—
good and weird fake crab rangoon.
—
bad curry balls.

maybe that’s why, when we showed up to the school and opened the door to our van, this is the first thing we saw:
—

—
all in all, though - great show, up in a terrace room at the top of their student center. diana, jen, and the rest of the gang were the best of help. sadly, when for some reason we started talking about the word “plethora”, and i asked how many people in the audience had seen !three amigos!, only 3 people out of about 150 raised their hands. what is this world coming to?!?!
—

after our time in oberlin, we went and did a show in cleveland, ohio, at john carroll university. it’s a jesuit school. it’s a little too “coincidental” that it’s initials are JCU - that’s like a christian radio station being called WWJD. hey, that’s funny.
—
anyhow, thanks to the duns family (3 siblings, all students, all helpin’ out), the jcu crew team, and peanut butter, for making the show work
—
the 'little theatre' was a cool venue.
—
other two guys onstage.
we spent about 24 hours in oberlin recently. here are some pictures of us and our friend ian rhodewalt.
—
ok, just wanted to put on official record the story of my hurt neck, before it’s all over TMZ.com.
—
pittsburgh, pa - march 31. we pull up to our holiday inn, with a couple spare hours in which to shower, call our loved ones, eat an apple, and go over material for the night’s show. as we park, out of pure van-induced boredom, i jump out of the van, put my hands into “gun” shape, and run around screaming “lock and load!”, looking this way and that. then, i pathetically say “ouch” as i feel a sudden sharp pain in my neck. it gets worse as the night goes on.
—
in the Days Before My Hurt Neck (DBMHN, i call them), i used to enjoy doing “the robot”. now, whenever i need to look to one side, i have to keep my head facing forward, and twist my whole torso, doing a perfect C-3PO impression. also, i used to be able to do the worm. now it might kill me.
—

…is us. we’re in the company of legends.
—

—
we had a great show at onu, though, despite a terrible neck injury i seem to have, and the fact that everyone was playin’ april fool’s pranks on us left and right. thanks everyone who made it happen.
tomorrow: a jesuit school in cleveland. lookout!
in the past few days we’ve seen a lot of great old friends at a conference in valley forge, pa, driven across the keystone state, and done a weirdly fun show for a medium-sized crowd in a vastly oversized futuristic terrordome at the university of pittsburgh. that’s all well and good, but today is april fool’s day, and in honor of the occasion, here’s a picture of the sign by the pool at the hotel we’re at right now:
—
i especially like 'vomitus'. we decided not to swim.
things we did on our drive from greenville, nc to newport news, va:
- took only state roads, no interstate highways
- saved a turtle
- pranged out
- thought we’d find great vegan food in norfolk, va - home of PETA hq; we didn’t.
- thought we’d have plenty of time to go to a beach or interact with some nature somehow; we didn’t.
- realized we’d forgotten the collards.
- bought local peanuts.
- sold a t-shirt to a woman at an army/navy store.
- peeped out our windows at rural north cackalack.
then we had a great show at christopher newport university. man, they treated us nicely. we love the south.

wednesday, march 26: safely snuggled away in our boston-area places of residence, we receive a call from our friends at east carolina university saying, basically “the crowd is all here and ready - when are you guys going to get here?”. we, with a flight down to north carolina booked for the next morning, under the (correct) impression that the show was scheduled for thursday night, said “tomorrow”. luckily, our old friends ecu improv group the swash were scheduled to open for us, so they just opened, middled and closed the show that night.
—
thursday, march 27: after a
bbq/cornbread snack and collards purchase, we went on to do a great show at ecu, with a great crowd, and with a fun opening show by those swash folks. all was well in greenville that night.
—
…but not the next morning, because i accidentally left the collards in our hotel room. damn.
—
tons of publicity all 'round the school. all wrong.
the swash, nee swashchucklers.
so long, new friends.
yesterday we flew in to richmond, virginia, to get ourselves down to greenville, north carolina, for a show. now, normally, we get into “town” with just enough time to take a couple hours in the nameless, faceless void that is the modern “hotel district” of the modern suburban-sprawl-type “city” - which basically means sitting in our hotel rooms and calling and emailing loved ones. but not yesterday, no no.
well, mainly yes, but aaron and i did take a quick trip to a tiny little vestige of home style barbecue called the skylight inn, in nearby ayden. some folks call this place the best bbq restaurant in the south. as a lover of food, aaron seemed to enjoy it thoroughly. as a vegetarian, i enjoyed my cornbread (probably cooked with lard). but i enjoyed even more stepping outside, meeting an especially enthusiastic collie/mutt named buddy, and buying 25 collard seedlings for $2. we love the south.
